LPG Service: Frequency, Filter Replacement, & Risks of Delay
Understand optimal LPG service intervals, the importance of filter replacement, and the risks of neglecting maintenance for your autogas system.
The decision to convert your vehicle to LPG is a smart financial move, delivering substantial fuel savings. You can expect to save around 35-45% on fuel costs compared to petrol, as LPG typically sells for about half the price per litre. While LPG consumption is approximately 10-15% higher by volume, the overall cost advantage is clear, with the investment usually paying for itself within 10-18 months. For high-mileage drivers, such as taxis, this payback period is often even shorter. To ensure these savings continue and your autogas system operates reliably and safely for years, regular, professional maintenance is essential.
Regular Service: What and When
We recommend servicing your LPG system every 10,000-15,000 kilometres or at least once a year, whichever milestone arrives first. This interval aligns well with typical vehicle maintenance schedules. During a service visit, our technicians perform a comprehensive diagnostic scan, visually inspect all critical components for any signs of wear or damage, meticulously check for potential gas leaks, and ensure the system’s calibration is optimal for your specific engine. This thorough diagnostic work and essential maintenance is transparently priced at 40 €/h.
The Importance of LPG Filters
Your autogas system relies on two crucial filters to maintain its integrity and performance: a liquid-phase filter, typically located near the reducer, and a gas-phase filter, positioned just before the injectors. These filters are designed to trap and remove microscopic impurities present in LPG fuel, thereby safeguarding sensitive components like the gas reducer and the injectors. The liquid filter efficiently catches larger particulate matter before the liquid gas vaporises, while the gas filter ensures only purified gas reaches the delicate injectors. Over time and mileage, these filters inevitably become saturated and clogged, restricting vital gas flow. This restriction can cause premature wear or outright damage to expensive parts. Therefore, replacing both filters at every service interval is critical for ensuring the long-term longevity, consistent performance, and efficiency of your entire autogas system. For all replacements and new installations, we utilise certified components from reputable brands such as Alex, AC Stag, Lovato, Landi Renzo, Digitronic, and Tomasetto.
Risks of Delayed Maintenance
Neglecting regular LPG service can quickly lead to a range of operational issues and increased costs. Initially, you might notice subtle reductions in engine performance, perhaps a slight, unexplained increase in fuel consumption beyond the typical 10-15% volume difference, or intermittent rough idling. As the filters become more severely clogged, the system will struggle to deliver gas correctly and consistently. This can cause noticeable misfires, illuminate the “Check Engine” light on your dashboard, and even force the system to automatically switch back to petrol. Prolonged neglect can ultimately lead to costly component failures, such as damaged injectors, a prematurely worn-out reducer, or issues with the multivalve. These extensive repairs will invariably cost significantly more than the modest investment in routine maintenance, especially considering our repair rate of 40 €/h. Furthermore, it’s important to remember that since 2023, official LPG conversion registration with the Estonian Transpordiamet (Transport Administration) is mandatory; a poorly maintained system with compromised components might fail its required technical inspection, leading to further expenses and inconvenience.
